Mary Irene Welch
She was a member of the greatest generation that ever lived, and she was known by the characteristics that marked that generation. Mary Irene Welch, better known as Irene, was a woman of strength and independence. She attended Freeport High School, and like many young women of World War II, she joined the workforce and there met the love of her life. She married Robert Harry Welch on April 22, 1945, and together, she and Bob raised four children. While he worked long hours to financially provide for the family, she worked long hours as well, making a haven of comfort and security for their children. On the home front, she knew what needed to be done, and she did it! Through their hard work and self-sacrifice, they provided many opportunities for their children to grow and flourish. She and Bob were faithfully committed to each other and observed 58 years of marriage prior to his passing on January 1, 2004.
