Mary Josie Sayre

Mary “Josie” Estes Sayre, 96, of Spartanburg, SC and formerly of Akron and Dover, Ohio died Thursday, January 26, 2006 at her home in Spartanburg.

She worked through World War II and many years afterwards at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Akron. She retired from Goodyear in 1972.

Born December 4, 1909 in Marshall County, Kentucky, she was the daughter and last living child of Rev. George Franklin Estes and Susan Elizabeth Frizzell Estes.

Josie had accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior when a young girl. She was a member of the First Baptist North Spartanburg and attended the “All About Christ” Bible Fellowship Class. She loved crocheting, working in the garden and yard and she always had lots of beautiful flowers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Wesley Sayre of Akron, Ohio who died in 1960, five brothers, Bedford F, Ollie M., Rollie M., Charles E., and Rev. William H. Estes; three sisters, Sarah L. Estes, Maymie B. McCuiston and Maudie D. Dove; five stepsons, Laban W. Sayre, Lester H. Sayre, Walter R. Sayre, Darrell R. Sayre, and Wilbur W. Sayre; All the spouses of the above named people are also deceased except for her sister in law, Glenda (Mrs. William H.) Estes with whom she lived since 1998. She is also survived by eleven nieces and nephews, a host of great nieces, great nephews, step grandchildren, step nieces and step nephews who will mourn her passing.

Friends will be received on Tuesday from 6-8 pm in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover. Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 11am in the Hillside Cemetery in Ellet, Ohio with her nephew, David Estes officiating.
