Mary L. Edwards, 84, of Paola, Kansas, and formerly of Brewster and Strasburg, died Sunday, July 19, 2009.
Born, January 31, 1925, in Dundee, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Elsie Baker Kate. Mary graduated from Dundee High School in 1942, and, in 1945 married Wyatt Edwards. She was a homemaker a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who also worked for a time as a librarian in Navarre.
Mary was a faithful member of the Strasburg United Methodist Church, as well as the Strasburg Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, where she held many offices, including Worthy Grand Matron. She enjoyed sewing and quilting, and had won awards for several of her quilts. Mary worked hard on restoring a log cabin in Dundee, a family project, which would later become a gathering place for holidays and other special occasions. Mary and Wyatt owned several classic automobiles, were car club members, and liked going car shows and meets. Additionally, she loved to play cards with family and friends, a tradition started by her father Harold it was a requirement at get-togethers.
Survivors include her son, Stephen Edwards of Paola; two granddaughters, Trisha Edwards of Marshall, Missouri, and Sara Edwards of Lawrence, Kansas; a brother, Richard (Cloe Ann) Kate of Dundee; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband Wyatt in 2002; a grandson, Eric Edwards; and by a brother, Paul Kate.
A funeral service will be held Friday, July 24, at 11 a.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, with Revs. Lynda K. Masters and Steven Court officiating. Burial will be in Union Lawn Cemetery, Navarre. Following the committal, there will be a luncheon in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard in Dover. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Thursday (today), July 23, 6 8 p.m. The Bolivar Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star will conduct services Thursday at 5:45 p.m. in the funeral home.
