Mary J. Smith, 96, of New Philadelphia passed away on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at the Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital.
She was born on September 18, 1927 in Dover and was a daughter of the late Jack and Despina Pardos Space. Mary was also preceded in death by her husband, Billy Joe Smith on July 24, 2002; son, Tony Smith; brothers, Jim, George (Bessie), Pete (Mary Ann) and Socrates Space; sister, Jean Space; and her special friend, Clara Hutras.
In her teenage years, she worked at Woolworth's, Union Hospital, and Goshen Dairy, showcasing her dedication and work ethic from a young age. Mary was a proud 1947 graduate of Dover High School. Her journey continued as she ventured into marriage with Billy Joe Smith in 1949. They eventually settled in Massillon where she worked at the Lincoln Way Candy Company. Later on, they made their way back to Tuscarawas County and established their home in New Philadelphia. Mary's involvement in a dress shop at Monroe Mall reflected her passion for fashion and style.
Mary excelled not only in her professional endeavors but also as the matriarch of her family. She will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. Her home exuded warmth and love, making everyone feel special and cherished. Mary's culinary skills were exceptional, particularly her Greek dishes; her Dolmades were unmatched and brought joy to all who had the pleasure of tasting them. Mary also found solace in quilting. Each grandchild and great-grandchild possesses a Yiya quilt lovingly crafted by her hands, serving as a lasting legacy of her creativity and care.
