Mattie Petersheim, 92, of New Philadelphia, died peacefully Saturday, June 28, 2008.
She was born August 24, 1915 at Charm, one of seven children born to the late Joe J. & Elizabeth Miller.
Mattie spent her life taking care of the home. Her deeply rooted faith was visible in everything she did and said, and she absolutely treasured her family. She attended New Philadelphia's Broadway United Methodist Church and had been active for years with the Southside Gospel Chapel at Uhrichsville.
Faith and family first was a great recipe for her 92 wonderful years, but it was not the only recipe she was familiar with. Mattie was quite talented in the kitchen. She enjoyed cooking, trying new recipes, and sharing the fruits of her labor with family and friends.
Most would consider her a green thumb as well. She was meticulous with her flower gardens and took great pride in the beauty of her plants and flowers.
Even into her later years, Mattie loved to travel, too. In fact, at 90, she made a cross-country visit to spend time with her daughters in Oklahoma and Colorado.
On February 8, 1999, she was saddened by the death of her husband, Jonas Petersheim.
She will be missed by family members who survive, including: three daughters, Betty (William) Mast, of Oklahoma, Emma (Roy) Hicks of Colorado, and Sarah (Charles) Stucin of Uhrichsville; a son, William J. Petersheim of New Philadelphia; 9 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; two sisters, Ada Petersheim of Dover and Betty Miller of Stark County; and a brother, Calvin (Dorothy) Miller of Wilmot.
In addition to her parents and husband, three sisters preceded Mattie in death: Katie Hershberger, Sarah Burkholder, and Nora Miller.
Rev. Bill Sowers will officiate a funeral service that celebrates Mattie's life on Wednesday, July 2 at 2:00 p.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, 246 E. High Ave., New Philadelphia. Interment will be in the Ridgecrest Memory Gardens. Following the burial, a meal will be held for family and friends in the Broadway United Methodist Church social hall.
Friends may call in the funeral home on Tuesday from 6-9 p.m.
Those unable to attend or wishing to share a fond memory may sign the online register book for Mattie by visiting the "obituaries" link on the funeral home's website.
The family suggests that memorial gifts be made to Mattie's favorite charity, The Galilean Children's Home at: PO Box 880, Liberty, Kentucky, 42539.
