Maxine Elizabeth Wise, age 90, passed away in her New Philadelphia home on Monday morning, April 15, 2013.
Born October 24, 1922, in Dover, she was a daughter of the late Chauncey and Olive Now Sharp. Maxine graduated from Dover High School in 1940, and began a career as a cosmetologist. At the age of 47, she enrolled in nursing school, and received the highest score on the State of Ohio's final certification to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. Maxine was employed by Aultman Hospital, Canton, for several years before going to work for Union Hospital at Dover, ultimately retiring in 1985. While at Union she was a member of the WWW Group.
Maxine married Earl Francis Wise on October 24, 1946. The couple reared five children and shared 48 years together before Earl's passing on October 25, 1994. She was a very loving and supportive mother and grandmother, and will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Maxine was a master quilter, having made hundreds of hand-stitched quilts over the years. In 2003, one of her quilts containing all the United States' official flowers and birds rendered in appropriate colors was featured at the Ohio State Fair Quilt Exhibition. She shared her love by giving her beautiful creations to family and friends on special occasions. Maxine also touched many lives by giving quilts to numerous newborn babies.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, New Philadelphia, and the church's Altar Society and LCBA. Maxine also liked attending services with family members at the First United Church of Christ at New Philadelphia.
She was an avid fan of U.S. and European PGA golf tournaments, and found great pleasure in simple things, especially cooking, embroidering, crocheting, knitting, gardening and caring for birds and flowers. Most of all, she enjoyed time spent with family and friends, and her little dog, Nibby, who was her constant companion.
Maxine is survived by her sons, John (Christopher Murdie), Howard, Richard "Dick" (Amy) and Sam (Kay) Wise; her daughter, Debbie (Chuck) Flint; her pride and joy her grandchildren, Sara (Rob) Steffens, Ryan (Jessica) Wise, Steven, Adam and Julie (Eric Shimko) Flint and Andrew Wise; many dear nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
