Maxine Ellen Myers

Maxine Ellen Myers, 92, of Dover passed away on August 23, 2014 at the Community Hospice House.

Born in Dover on January 10, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Frances (Sweany) Riggenbach.

Following her graduation from Dover High School in 1939, she was employed as a receptionist in the office of Dr. S.T. Marshall in Dover. She later employed in the stenographic department of Reeves Steel and Manufacturing Company in Dover until her marriage of Homer E. Myers of Strasburg on September 11, 1943. They moved in May of 1947 to a farm north of Beach City.

During the many years they lived on the farm, Maxine was active with the PTA while her children were in school. She served many years on the election board of Sugarcreek Township and later spent 5 years as secretary at Camp Wanake.

Maxine had many hobbies. She made Christmas ornaments, decorated cakes for friends, loved sewing, reading, working on word puzzles, and playing cards with friends. On the farm she and Homer planted large gardens. She froze or canned much of the produce, plus hundreds of quarts of fruit bought locally.

Maxine was a long active member of the Strasburg United Methodist Church, having been a teacher and member of the choir. She was also a member of the Wilmot Women's Club serving as president for several years.

Her husband Homer died on February 8, 2002 and in 2004 she sold the farm and relocated at Engel Terrace Apartments in Beach City. In 2011 she moved to Country Club Retirement Campus in Dover where she resided until this past Saturday.

She will be missed by her two children; Stanely E. Myers of Mt. Solon, Virginia, Marilyn K. Youngman of Trenton Illinois; grandchildren, Nancy (Tim) Hawley, Beth (Tony) Neal, Sam (Machelle) Myers, Dan (Jeannie) Myers all of Virginia, and Amy (Dwight) Faitz, David (Barbara) Youngman of Illinois, along with 11 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death were her husband; Homer, son; Thomas Myers, daughter in-law, Suzan Myers; and granddaughter, Jennifer Myers; and her brother, Frank Riggenbach.

A celebration of Maxine's life will be held at the Strasburg United Methodist Church on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at 11:00 am with Pastor Jason Humble officiating. Interment will take place at Grandview Cemetery in Strasburg. Following the service of committal, a meal will be served in the church fellowship hall. Friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Friday, August 29, 2014 from 4-7 pm and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
