Michael J. Patton, 54, of New Philadelphia, Ohio died unexpectedly Wednesday, December 20, 2006 in his home.

Born February 24, 1952 in Dover, he was the son of Heber “Jay” Patton of Dover and the late Martha Wallick Patton.

Mike was a well known and respected area schoolteacher and coach. Over the last thirty years, he taught and coached at several area schools including Buckeye Career Center, Tuscarawas Valley, Tuscarawas Central Catholic, Garaway, Mansfield Madison, Carrollton, Sandy Valley, Conotton Valley, and Indian Valley School Districts. He was a Principal at Conotton Valley from 1993-96. He was proud of his coaching career as well having been an assistant football coach at Strasburg, Fairless, Indian Valley South and North, Dover, Claymont, Conotton Valley, Carrollton, Mansfield Madison and Garaway. The highlights of his coaching career included four- time conference runner up, eight-time conference champion, and three-time State Qualifier for Claymont, Conotton Valley and Carrollton. He was involved in coaching forty All Ohio linemen. He was also Asst. Varsity Basketball coach under the legendary Charlie Huggins. As head varsity track coach, his teams achieved a record of 112-16 in dual meets. He had two teams place as Regional Runners Up and had several teams place in the Ohio High School State Track meet.

Mike was a 1970 graduate of Strasburg High School. He graduated from Kent State University with a B.S. degree in Secondary education in 1974. He attended The University of Akron and graduated with a M.S. degree in Secondary Administration. He also earned credits at Ohio University, Youngstown State University and Ashland University.

He attended New Pointe Community Church (formerly Sugarcreek Free Methodist). He was previously involved in the Claymont Jaycees, Uhrichsville Volunteer Fire Department, A-1 Laubacher Ambulance Service, and previously was active in the First United Methodist Church in Uhrichsville, and United Way Day Care Center.

Mike was an avid Ohio State University football fan. His favorite pastimes included biking and fishing at Lake Erie and Canada. Mike loved his family and enjoyed attending his children�(TM)s activities.

In addition to his father, Mike is survived by his daughter, Danielle Patton of New Philadelphia and his son, Brett Patton of Columbus; a sister, Sandy (Floyd) Warren of Clayton, California; nieces and nephews, Scott (Theresa) Warren, Kirsten (Michael) Morris, John Krempel and Cathy Krempel along with his great nieces, Kimberly Amber, Kayla, and Alyssa Krempel and great nephews, Dax Morris and Chris Krempel.

In addition to his mother, Mike was preceded in death by his sister, Dalene Krempel.

A funeral service celebrating Mike�(TM)s life will be held Wednesday at 11am in the New Pointe Community Church at Dover with Pastor Chad Stutzman officiating. Friends may call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Tuesday from 4-8 pm.
