Mildred L. Short

Mildred L. Short, 85, of Chardon, Ohio and formerly of Dover died Thursday, January 6, 2011 at University Hospital of Cleveland after a period of declining health.

She was born on September 11, 1925 at North East, Pennsylvania, a daughter of the late Gilbert and Zilpha Peck Garnow. Mildred graduated from North East High School in 1943 and Bryant and Stratton College in Buffalo, New York in 1945. She worked at Household Finance in Buffalo and at W.T. Grant in Erie Pennsylvania before marrying Robert Short on December 27, 1947. While Bob was attending Ohio University, she worked at the University as a secretary in the Physical Education Department.

In 1950 they moved to Dover when Bob began his career at the Ohio Department of Transportation. In 2003, due to health reasons, they moved to Chardon to reside with their daughter and her family.

Mildred was a member of the Strasburg Lutheran Church, Women's Study Club, Church Circle, Bridge Club, Dover Historical Society, Bona Mater, CCL and Eastern Star. She was the past president of the Study Club, Dover Avenue PTA, Bona Mater and the Lutheran Church Women. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, a Girl Scout Leader, and taught Bible and Sunday Schools.

Millie enjoyed sewing, crossword puzzles, flea markets, quilting, cards, travel and her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert, who passed away on August 6, 2006; her father and mother; one brother, Raymond, Garnow, and his wife, Lillian Garnow; a sister, Rosalind Miller, and her husband, Herbert Miller.

She is survived by two sons; Gary (Jeanette) Short of Columbus; Harry (Nancy) Short of Dover; a daughter, Cathy (Tim) MeKota of Chardon; two grandchildren, Gus and Hannah Mekota of Chardon; a brother, Edward Garnow of Erie, Pennsylvania.

A celebration of Mildred's life will take place at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 1:00 pm with Pastor Steven Woyen of the Strasburg Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will follow at Dover Burial Park. Following the service of committal, a meal will be served at the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Saturday from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm.
