Milton Charles "Milt" Hinkley

August 15, 1930 — October 30, 2014

Milton C. "Milt" Hinkley, 84, of New Philadelphia and formerly of Gnadenhutten and Florida, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, October 30, 2014 following a long illness, at Amberwood Manor Nursing Home. He spent many months at home under the care of Community Hospice. He took his last breath down here and his next in Heaven. He is now walking the streets of gold.

Milt was the son of the late William "Bill" Hinkley and the late Marilla (Samson-Gruver) Hinkley.
Milt was a Junior Air Raid Warden in Detroit, Michigan during WWII. He later joined the U.S. Navy and served as a teletype operator in San Diego, California. He was honorably discharged in January of 1950.

On July 29, 1950 he married Elizabeth "Betty" Naomi Sandberg in Owosso, Michigan.

For fifteen years, he worked in factories including, Ford Motor Company in Detroit and Owosso. Then Milt and his wife were recruited by the Salvation Army to become supply officers in Wichita, Kansas, where they were later promoted to Auxiliary Captains. It was there that Milt was put in charge of the disaster unit and obtained a vehicle which was refurbished and made into a Salvation Army Mobile Canteen. Milt enjoyed helping others and established a command post with CB radios for the disaster unit.

For many years, family vacations were spent camping at the Otsego Lake County Park in Michigan. Memories were made, especially the compulsory K.P. duties. His five boys loved it because afterwards it was play time.

In 1972, he moved to Ohio and became an over-the-road truck driver traveling to most of the 48 continental states. He enjoyed doing this for over 30 years accompanied by his wife on occasion.

Milt is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, whom he celebrated 64 years of marriage on July 29, 2014. Also surviving are his children; Stephen Eugene (Katherine) Hinkley, Philip Charles Hinkley, Paul Lavern (Debbie) Hinkley, Michael David Hinkley, Jerry Lynn (Cathy) Hinkley, and adopted son/grandson, Brandon Michael (Brandie) Hinkley. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Tammy and David Hinkley, Amanda (AJ) Currie, Paul (Kady) Hinkley, Gabrielle Hinkley, and Carrie (Sean) Palmer.
In addition to his parents, Milt is also preceded in death by two grandsons; Loren Ray and Christopher Stephen Hinkley; brothers, Millard Gruver, Ralph Gruver, Alvin Hinkley, and Howard Hinkley; and sisters, Gertrude Gruver Wisswell, and Fairy Hinkley.

In honoring Milt's wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover. A private interment will take place at Dover Burial Park.
