Opal J. Baughman, 88, of Dover passed away on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at the Community Hospice House.
Born on January 25, 1926 in Dover, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Celia (Mason) Maurer. She graduated from Dover High School in the class of 1944.
On October 22, 1944, Opal married the love of her life, Clark E. Baughman, who preceded her in death on January 16, 1997. She is also preceded in death by her brother, Glen Maurer and her cousin, Phyllis Schmucker.
She was the owner of the Home Engineering Company in Dover. She also owned and managed the Old Homestead Restaurant in Zoar.
Opal was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Dover, where she was active with Sarah's Circle. She was also a member of the Winfield Grange for 61 years. She loved playing cards, especially Jass. She could be found almost every afternoon and evening at the Senior Center or various places playing cards with friends. She enjoyed a manicured yard and spent much of her time tending to her flower garden.
She will be missed by her children; Sherry (Ronald) Maurer formerly of Zoar, Gary (Pam) Baughman of Dover, Randy (Janine) Baughman of Bowling Green; six grandchildren, Shelly (Jim) Jepsen of Amanda, Ohio, Jill (Dan) Capozella of Dover, Robin (Mike) Griesen of Dover, Nathaniel (Heather Brooks) Baughman of Dover, Benjamin (Pam) Baughman of Griffin, GA, and William Baughman of Bowling Green; great-grandchildren, Cheyenne and Sierra Jepsen of Amanda, Ohio, Viviana and Carlo Capozella of Dover, Cole and Tori Griesen of Dover; along with her sister, Doris Meryo of Dover; cousin, Bob Schmucker formerly of Millersburg and recently of Sarasota, FL; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Opal's life will be held at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home in Dover on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Thomas Dunkle officiating. Interment will take place at Dover Burial Park. Following the service of committal, a meal will be served at the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 from 4-7 and one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
