Paul Altier, 84, of Dover, died suddenly Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, in his home.
Born Jul. 30, 1919, in Dover, he was a son of the late Vito and Eda Fazi Altier. Paul was a 1938 graduate of Dover High School, where he played football. He played in the first game at Crater Stadium. Paul was a sports fan all of his life. Later, he attended High Point University, High Point, NC. Paul served in the United States Army during World War II in Africa, Sicily, Italy and France. He retired in 1982 after forty-seven years with the Reeves Steel Co., Dover.
Paul was a member of St. Joseph Church, Loyal Order of Moose, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Army-Navy Garrison, all of Dover. He was also a member of the New Philadelphia post of the V.F.W.
Survivors include a daughter, Paula J. (Jim) Ickes of Dover; two sons, William L. “Bill” (Nancy) Altier, and Duane M. Altier, both of Dover; six grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, Matt (Lory)Dessecker, Anthony Dessecker, Wendy Dupler, Billie-Jo, Trisha and Michael Altier; three great-grandchildren, Jimmy Dessecker, Justus Dupler and Brandon Dessecker; sister, Constance “Connie” Finley of Dover; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Medley Altier, in 1988; a sister, Laura Povick; and a brother, Raymond Altier.
There will be a funeral Mass Friday, Dec. 12, at 11 a.m., in St. Joseph Church with Fr. William L. Arnold as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Dover, where military rites will be conducted by the New Philadelphia post of the V.F.W. Following the committal, family and friends are invited to a meal in St. Joseph School. Visitation will be Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003, 5-8 p.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home, Dover.
