Paul E. "Gene" Altier, 76, of Massillon, died Friday, May 23, 2008 following a brief illness, in Aultman Hospital, Canton surrounded by his loving family.
Born, November 20, 1931, in Dover, he was a son of the late Dominic and Jennie Franzo Altier. Gene graduated from St. Joseph's High School in Dover, and later went on to attend DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago. He served honorably as a Corporal in the United States Army during the Korean War and was later employed by Goodyear Aerospace in Akron for many years.
During his years of retirement, Gene was a tutor for elementary students in the Canton area through the Foster Grandparent Program, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. He always found creative ways to teach, even in the final moments of his life. He also served as an ombudsman for the State of Ohio spending time with nursing home patients to make sure they had been fed, knew where their glasses were, or simply reassuring them that he was there to listen. He was an avid reader and was knowledgeable in many subjects. Gene liked to play golf and spent many happy hours on the links with his brother Leonard. He was also a model railroader, putting together elaborate train boards with which he delighted his family.
He is survived by a daughter, Rebecca "Becky" (Chris) Frederick of Ludington, MI; a son, Patrick (Tracy) Altier of Ocala, FL; five grandchildren, Brooke, Sawyer and Cloe Frederick, and Blayre and Brett Altier; a sister, Mary Jane (Leonard) Margletta of Dover, and a brother, Fred (Jo Anne) Altier of New Philadelphia; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his grandson, Bo Altier; and by his brother, Leonard Altier.
A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, May 28, at 2 p.m., in St. Joseph Church, Dover, with Fr. William A. Arnold officiating. Gene will be buried in Calvary Cemetery, Dover. Family and friends may call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Wednesday, 12 1:45 p.m.
His gentle, giving spirit, the sound of his laughter, and his "homemade pies" will be missed greatly by all who knew him.
