Paul E. Schweitzer, 77, of New Philadelphia, died Thursday, Apr. 24, 2008, in his home after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born, Feb. 4, 1931, in Bolivar, on the Ohio-Erie Canal, he was a son of the late Jesse Hennis and Mary Schweitzer. Paul's mother died when he was five years old, and he was reared by his late grandmother, Hazel Schweitzer, and his late uncle and aunt, Walter and Edythe Schweitzer. In his younger days, he enjoyed berry-picking and mushroom-hunting.
Paul was employed by the Robinson Clay Co. in Parral and its successor, Zedmark, for forty-six years. He was an avid reader, and, above all, a loving father. Paul was "a friend of Bill and Bob" for over twenty-six years.
Survivors include five daughters, Hazel I. (Ron) Bailey of Baltic, Cindy S. (Walter) Sutkowy of Lehigh Acres, FL, Betty L. (Ronald) Dixon of Naples, FL, Paula K. (Gary) Shotwell and Debby D. Daniels, both of New Philadelphia; grandchildren, Christina and Larry Schweitzer, Verna Kauffman and Gary Scharr, Jan Fernandez, Julie Frangello, Danny and Steven Daniels, Lori Ditto, Beth, Michelle, Michael, Stephanie and David Sutkowy, Rhonda Donley and Brian Bailey; great-grandchildren, Josiah and Noah Fernandez, Alexis and Preston Kauffman, Kyra Ditto and Keira Donley; a brother, Richard (Shirley) Schweitzer of Barnhill; his former wife, Laura Hidey; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and the grandmother Hazel and uncle and aunt, Walter and Edythe, Paul was preceded in death by an uncle and aunt, Jim and Pat Schweitzer.
Family and friends may call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Monday, Apr. 28, 5 - 8 p.m. A celebration of Paul's life will take place Tuesday, Apr. 29, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home, officiated by Paul's daughter, Betty. Immediately following the service, family and friends are invited to share a meal in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard in Dover. In keeping with Paul's wishes, he will be cremated and his cremated remains will be buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Dover at a later date.
