Paul J. Scherer, 92, of Dover, Ohio joined his dearest, Kay on Saturday, March 25, 2006.

Paul was a retired carpenter for J.A. Raeder Construction Company and had previously worked with his father and brother in the H.E. Scherer & Sons Construction Company at Strasburg. He along with his wife, Kay also operated the former Scherer�(TM)s Sweet Shoppe in New Philadelphia.

Born February 18, 1914 in Strasburg, Ohio, he was the son of the late Harry and Nettie Drescher Scherer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Kathleen R. “Kay” (Keppler) Scherer, a son, Bob Scherer, a brother, Donald F. Scherer and a sister, Vera Davis.

Paul was an active member of the St. John�(TM)s United Church of Christ at Dover where he had served as an elder, Sunday school teacher, and was a choir member for many years. He was also a Life member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Dover Elks Lodge and served as Master of Ceremonies of the many former Elks Minstrels. He recently received his 50 yr. award as a Mason having been a member and Worshipful Master of the Tuscarawas F&AM #59 at Dover. He was a charter member of the Dover Jaycees, Founding member of the Strasburg Dramatic Club, and was a member of the SPEBSQSA Barbershop Chorus. He was a talented musician which included singing, playing the piano and ukulele, and had recently started to learn to play the trombone. He was also a founding member of the Little Theater of Tuscarawas County and was a lead in Rainmaker and Sound of Music. He also enjoyed entertaining at the Hennis Care Centre. He also loved performing with his family in a quartet for many years. He was a devoted husband and father and loved traveling 46 of the 50 states with his wife, Kay.

Paul was a graduate of Strasburg High School and served in the U.S. Navy as part of the 17th battalion or Sea Bees in Saipan. In June of 1944, Paul constructed buildings by day and performed music for the troops at night.

He is survived by his daughter, Margaret Ann Brunner and her husband, Don Maurer of Dover and his son, Skip and wife, Kitty Scherer of North Canton; five grandchildren, Matt (Janice) Brunner of Bloomington, Indiana, Marc (Libby) Brunner of Canal Winchester, Nathan Putzier of Washington D.C., Katiann and Katrina Scherer of North Canton; three great grandchildren, Kyler and Kaden Brunner of Bloomington and Maxton Brunner of Canal Winchester and his sister in law, Anna Mae Keppler of Dover.

A funeral service celebrating Paul�(TM)s life will be held Friday, March 31, 2006 at 1pm in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover with Pastor Dan Schaefer officiating. Interment will be in the Dover Burial Park where the Dover VFW will conduct military graveside services. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 6-8 pm.
