Phyllis I. Applegate, age 92, of Dover, passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2024, in Dover’s Park Village Health Care Center.
Born January 12, 1932, in Orrville, she was the daughter of the late Fred G. and Hazel (Meanor) Miller. Phyllis moved with her family at a young age to Tuscarawas County where she graduated from Uhrichsville High School. She previously belonged to the Foursquare Gospel Church in Dover, and was presently a faithful member of the Dennison Foursquare Church, where she was a deaconess, taught Sunday school, belonged to the women’s fellowship and helped in the nursery. Additionally, Phyllis gave freely of her time and talent volunteering for the Red Cross in blood donation and helping to feed the hungry.
She was wed to James L. Applegate on November 1, 1970; the couple shared 15 years of marriage prior to James’ untimely passing on May 14, 1985. Phyllis was employed by the Wonder Bread - Hostess Store in Dover, from which she retired as manager in 1994 after 15 years there. One of her favorite pastimes was working jigsaw puzzles, and she assembled many over the years.
Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Linda (Doug) Kendle of Dover; her step- daughter, Kathy (William) Mulligan of Uhrichsville; her five grandchildren, Greg (Jennifer) Kuhl, Derek and Rodney (Katie) Stevens, Sara (Kirt) Barr and Lacey Hylton; her nine great-grandchildren; and her niece and nephew.
Besides her parents, and her husband, James, Phyllis was preceded in death by her son, Wayne West; her granddaughter, Chelsea Mulligan; and her brother, George Miller.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, on Thursday, October 10, 5 - 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held Friday, October 11, at 11:30 a.m. in the Dennison Foursquare Church; Pastor Rod Phillips will officiate. Directly after the service, there will be a luncheon in the church hall. Burial will be later, following cremation, in East Avenue Cemetery, New Philadelphia.
