Phyllis Arlene Machan Baker

Phyllis Arlene Machan Baker, age 101 of Dover, died September 28, 2018 at the Community Hospice Truman House in New Philadelphia after a sudden illness.

Born on May 16, 1917 in Dundee, Ohio she was the daughter of the late Clifford and Lillian Deetz Machan. Phyllis was also proceeded in death by her husband of 59 years Verle E. Baker on August 18, 2013; brothers Richard and Dale Machan, brother and sister-in-law Donald and Twila Baker Weber, brother-in-law William Jones and nephew Kyle Machan.


Phyllis was a member of the Dover First United Methodist Church and had been a long-standing member of the Tusco Travelers Campers Club. Phyllis also was a member of both the Dover and Tuscarawas County Historical Societies. She was especially interested in the history of our local area and was proud to have been inducted into Daughters of the American Revolution, the First Families of Ohio and the First Families of Tuscarawas County. Phyllis spent years in the scouting world helping with both the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts due to the involvement of her husband and her children. She graduated from Wayne Township High School and the Canton Actual Business College, and worked at the former Weaver Motor Company prior to her marriage.

She will be sadly missed by her children Clifford (Adeline) Baker of North Canton, Craig (Beth Gauvey) Baker and Michele (Glenn) Garber of Dover; her grandson Eric Baker of Pittsburgh, brother Robert (Wanda) Machan of Dover, sister Mary Alice Jones of Akron, and several nieces.

Cremation has been entrusted to the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover. A private graveside service will take place at a later date.
