Raymond J. “Pete” Mathews died at home on October 23rd, 2005. Born April 11th, 1921, in Dover, Ohio she was a lifetime resident of Dover. Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond J. Mathews and Mary Ethel (Craig) Mathews, his wife of 63 years Betty June (Metzger) Mathews, one son, Dennis Mathews, and one grand daughter Melanie K. Mathews.
Raymond is survived by his sons Gary (Miyuki) Mathews of Canton, Ohio, Tim (Marty) Mathews of Akron, Ohio, Jeff (Julie) Mathews of Ishpeming, Michigan, Edward Mathews of Northport, Florida, and daughter Sally Mathews of Sarasota, Florida, 8 grand children, and 6 great-grandchildren. He was a loving father and husband and a caring friend to many.
Raymond retired from the B&O Railroad after 40 years of service. He was a graduate of Dover High School, and a US Army veteran of World War II serving in Germany and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign. Raymond was a member of the Tuscarawas Lodge #59 F&AM and a Royal Arch Mason Tuscarawas Chapter #38, St. Bernard Commandery #051 Knight Templar, 32nd Scottish Rite Valley of Canton, and a member of Tadmor Shrine. He was also a lifetime member of VFW Thomas J Ayers Post 3463.
Friends may call on Wednesday between 6 and 8 pm at the Toland�"Herzig Funeral Homes and Crematory, 803 North Wooster Avenue, Dover, Ohio. Masonic services will begin at 5:45 pm. Graveside services will be held at Dover Burial Park on Thursday, October 27, 2005 at 11:00 am with Rev. Larry Black officiating. The Dover VFW will honor Pete�(TM)s service to his country with a military graveside service. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Tuscarawas County in lieu of flowers.
