Raymond “Skin” Mills, Jr., 82 of Canton and formerly of Dover died Friday,
November 13, 2009 at Aultman Hospital.
He had retired from Empire-Detroit Steel in Dover after 25 years of service.
Born October 13, 1927 in Dade, Georgia he was a son of the late Raymond
Sr. and Lillie Mae Cole Mills. He was also preceded in death by three
children, Kevin Mills, Bobby Mills and Norene Mills; brother, Robert
Mills.
Skin was a member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Dennison where
he was a Trustee Emeritus and was also a member of the Canton Negro Old Timers Athletic Association and the Juneites Club. Skin was a devoted Mason and belonged to the Masonic Lodge #111 F&AM in Uhrichsville and the Royal Arch Masons, St. Lukes Chapter #15 in Cleveland. He was also an Army veteran.
Skin was loved by his family and friends and was known for his ribs,
especially his rib sauce. People far and wide wanted to know his famous
recipe, to which he never gave in. He even had to drop out of a few rib
cook-offs because of his refusal to divulge the secret.
A wonderful father and grandfather, Skin is survived by his daughters,
Shaurita Mills of Canton, Cheryl (husband, Mark) Streeter of Hampton,
Virginia, Tina (husband, Richard) Brooks of Lorain; sons, Vincent Belcher
of Newcomerstown and Arthur “Buck” Smith of Dover; brothers, James “Bud”
(wife, Evelyn) Mills and Eddie (wife, Shirley) Mills both of Dover;
sisters, Elsie White of Dover and Annie (husband, Joseph) Lowery of New
Philadelphia; sister in law, Grace Mills of Springfield, Ohio; 12
grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 20, 2009 at 11:00 am in
the Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Dennison with Rev. Max Milliner
officiating. Interment will be at the Union Cemetery in Uhrichsville. Friends can call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Homes and Crematory at Dover on Thursday from 7-9 pm with Masonic Services starting at 7:30.
