Reader "Ray" Chumney

New Philadelphia, Ohio

Reader "Ray" Chumney Jr, 83, of New Philadelphia, passed away on August 24, 2024, at Claymont Health & Rehabilitation. Born on February 9, 1941, in Dover, Ohio, he was the son of the late Reader R. and Lena (Opplinger) Chumney Sr. 

 Ray dedicated many years to his career as the owner of Chumney Trucking where he made many life-long friends. After a successful career, he retired in 2005, leaving a legacy of hard work and commitment. Following his retirement, he and his wife, Barbara, spent their winters in Holiday, Florida for many years. 

Ray was not just known for his professional achievements; he was also deeply involved in his community and faith. He was a devoted member of St. Johns United Church of Christ in Dover, where he served on the church council. 

He leaves behind his wife, Barbara (Phillippi) Chumney, whom he married on April 5, 1958. He will also be sadly missed by his three sons, Todd (Joan) Chumney of Dennison, Tim Chumney (Patti Grezlik) of New Philadelphia, and Marty (Dani) Chumney of New Philadelphia; seven grandchildren; Tyler (Carolyn) Chumney of Dover, Erika Chumney of Canton, Dustin Chumney of New Philadelphia, Laurel (Nate) Stokey of Dover, Derek (Jennie) Chumney of Evans, Georgia, Brock Chumney of New Philadelphia, and Blake Chumney of New Philadelphia;  four great-grandchildren, Reid and Tate Stokey, and Millie and Noah Chumney; his brother, Ervin (Betty) Chumney; along with his sister-in-law, Charlene Chumney. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Doyle (Lillian) Chumney, Gene (Shirley) Chumney, and Walt Chumney. 

Ray’s family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Claymont Health and Rehabilitation for the incredible care that he received while he was in their care over the last several years.
