Richard E. 'Dick' Hammerstrom
Born March 4, 1930, at Dover he was the son of the late Philip and Elizabeth Hammerstrom.
Dick grew up in Tin Town near the Tuscarawas River where, in his youth, he developed a great love for fishing and hunting.
He graduated from Dover High School in 1948 and was a U.S. Army veteran who seriously considered a military career.
In 1958 he married Beverly A. Santee of Uhrichsville and enjoyed living 43 years on five acres in the Winfield area before moving to Dover. There they raised their three children: Chad, Chet, and Holly (Steve) Rieger.
Surviving is one sister, Phyllis Espenschied, and two deceased brothers: Harold and Phillip.
Dick retired in banking with the Huntington National Bank as Vice President of consumer lending with the Tuscarawas County offices, following their merger with the Reeves Banking and Trust Co.
He was a member of Masonic Lodge #59 at Dover. He had previously been active in the Tuscarawas Chapter of the American Cancer Society and had served as president.
The beauty of nature and the challenge of hunting kept Dick busy in the different hunting seasons. He felt fall squirrel season with all its colors was nature at its best. Bow and gun hunting for turkey and deer took him to Harrison County where he made daily stops at "Tatman's" for early breakfast. The locals were always gracious to him.
Together Dick and Beverly shared the joys of their home, their children and all the work that goes with maintaining a happy 54 years of marriage.
He is a member of New Philadelphia First United Methodist Church and the Cross Builders Sunday School Class. A strong faith in God's greatness was evident in his life. Psalm 136:1 Give Thanks to the Lord, for He is good.
Memorials can be sent to The New Philadelphia First United Methodist Church food pantry Programs at 201 West High Avenue, New Philadelphia, OH.
