Richard H. “Dick” Mathias, 77, of Dover, died Sunday, January 7, 2007 in his home.
He was born May 3, 1929 at New Philadelphia, the son of the late Clyde V. and Pauline Plunkett Mathias.
For 33 years, the former Reeves Steel Company at Dover employed Dick in a variety of positions.
He honorably served our country in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
Dick was an avid golfer " even boasting a couple of holes-in-one over the years. He enjoyed the company of his golf buddies and always looked forward to their annual golf vacations. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially Gin, and was most days pretty easy to find stationed at a card table at the VFW embroiled in a serious hand.
In addition to playing golf, Dick had been a fine athlete dating back to his days at Dover High School. His family still pridefully remembers his 1946 recognition for outstanding play at left end for Dover and the news headline that made him a member of the “Glory Eleven.” He loved watching sporting events on television.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Joanne Nigro Mathias.
Other survivors include: four children, Stephanie (Jim) Doutt of Medina, Joellyn (Tim) Troyer of Silver Lake, Ohio, Clyde Richard Mathias, and John Patrick Mathias both of Dover; six grandchildren, Alexa Salina Doutt, Jennifer Lynn (Tom) Young, Sarah Mathias Troyer, Corissa Sue Kail, Preston Cole Cave, and Karie Jo Mathias; a great grandson, Jack Thomas Young; and a sister, Betty Jean Michelli of New Philadelphia.
