Richard L. “Dick” Arter, 66, of Dover, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, in his home. Dick fought a long, hard battle with cancer, which he faced with great courage and humor. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Born Aug. 16, 1937, in New Philadelphia, Dick was a son of the late Harry P. and Ethel M. Garabrandt Arter. He was a graduate of Midvale High School, and was employed by Armco Steel Co., Dover, for thirty-one years, retiring in 1992 as a crane operator.
Dick loved music and was a well-known area musician, singing and playing the guitar. For many years, he had his own band named Variety, and more recently played with area bluegrass musicians. Dick enjoyed fishing and woodworking; he was a jack-of-all-trades, always willing to lend a hand to someone who needed it. He was also a cartoonist. Friends would often ask Dick to make drawings for them, or to characterize an event in a picture.
He was a social member of the Dover Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose at Uhrichsville.
Survivors include his wife, Maura S. Cull Arter; a daughter, Jill (Harv) Ankrom of Dover; son, Richard (Debra) Arter of Dover; daughter-in-law and her husband, Valerie and Bill Lusic of Dover; grandchildren, Harv II, Jaime, Meghan, Christian, Ian, Shaun, Bianca and Steven; great-grandchildren, Ashton and Zeke; several nieces and nephews; his faithful dog, Blue; cat, Rascal; and many dear and wonderful friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Shaun Michael Arter; two sisters, Harriet Reardon Anderson and Carol Adams Petricola; and by an infant brother, Carl Arter.
