Richard Lee Hayward

Richard L. Hayward, 82, of New Philadelphia passed away at the Community Hospice House on Sunday, August 4, 2013 following a two year battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Born on August 3, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan, he was the son of the late Charles and Jeannette Hayward. He is also preceded in death by his brother, Patrick Hayward.

He honorably served our country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He later married the love of his life, Joan Gummere, on June 16, 1956. Together they had four children. Scott (Patti) Hayward of White Lake, MI, Donna Hayward of Avinger, TX, Kevin Hayward of Tyler, TX, Mark (Mo) Hayward of Las Vegas, NV.

Richard was a police officer and a helicopter pilot in Detroit, Michigan for over 27 years. He was a member of the First Moravian Church in Dover, New Philadelphia Elks Lodge #510, and the Detroit Police Officer Association. Richard was a "Jack of All Trades." He especially loved woodworking and his handmade grandfather clock.

He will be sadly missed by his best buddy, an English Springer Spaniel named, Gunner. His brother Edward (Marilyn) Hayward of Dearborn Hgts, MI, his in-laws; Dick and Judy Gummere of Dover, Bob Gummere of Hilton Head, SC; his grandchildren, Joshua, Jordan, Morgan, Kendal, Luke, Abby, Kendall, Lauren, Riana, and Mia; his great grandchildren, Alema, Melosi, Ayliah, Amani; along with his many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to celebrtate Richard's life, Thursday, August 8, 2013 from noon until 2:00 PM at the First Moravian Church in Dover. The service starts at 2:00pm with Pastor John Wallace officiating. The Dover VFW will conduct military honors immediately following the service. A meal will be served in the church fellowship hall. In honoring Richard's wishes, cremation will take place. The Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover is handling the arrangements.
