Richard P. "Dick" Mercer, age 74, of Dover, died Tuesday, November 4, 2014, in Affinity Medical Center, Massillon, following a brief illness.
Born August 9, 1940, in New Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Robert E. Sr. and Beatrice L. (Miller) Mercer. Dick attended school in Sugarcreek and was employed by Bolivar Rubber Co. until a disability made it no longer possible for him to work.
Dick was a member of the Eagles Aerie 515 of Dover, and was a great fan of Dover football, the Cleveland Browns and Ohio State.
Survivors include his son, Richard E. Mercer of Dover; his daughter, Ruth Robinson of New Philadelphia; his six grandchildren; his eight great-grandchildren; his brother, Gary (wife, Sarah) Mercer of Dover; his sister Bella Lynn (fiance, Brian Hunt) Harding of Tuscarawas; his several nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Tony Smitley.
In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by two sons, Michael Pongrat and Jeffery Mercer; three grandchildren, Heather Jo Mercer, Lisa Marie and Laura Jane Anderson; a brother, Robert E. Mercer, Jr.; and two sisters, Jean Kimble and Sandra Scott.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, of Friday, November 7, 3 5 p.m. The Dover Eagles will conduct rites at 2:45 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 5, officiated by Maj. Robert Sears of the Salvation Army. There will be a meal immediately afterwards in the Dover Eagles Club. Burial will be later in Dover Burial Park.
