Richard "Rick" R. Staley, 65, of Dover, Ohio died Monday morning, May 18, 2009 in his home following a brief illness.

Born September 25, 1943 in Dennison, Ohio, he was the son of the late Raymond and Ruth (Schug) Staley.

Rick retired in 2001 as a devoted schoolteacher for thirty five years in the Dover Elementary schools having taught at Dover Avenue, East, and Park schools. He also was the Dover High School Boy's track coach and the freshman football coach. Rick had also previously coached Dover Girl's Track for several years having won the State championship in 1995. He also previously was a coach for the Dover High School Varsity football team. He was recently honored at the All County Track Meet.

Rick was a member of the First Moravian Church at Dover. He was also Past Exalted Ruler and longtime secretary of the Dover Elks Lodge #975, member of the Mystic Tie #194 Masonic Lodge, and the Dover VFW.

He was a 1961 graduate of Tuscarawas Warwick High School. He attended Kent State University and received his Bachelors degree from Malone College and his Masters degree from Ashland University. He enjoyed playing a round of golf, fishing and an occasional card game. He loved vacationing with his family.

Rick is survived by his wife, Carol (Ronald) Staley with whom he would have celebrated 43 years of marriage on August 13; He is also survived by two daughters, Stephanie (Caton) McGhee and Bethanie Staley; four grandchildren, Chanz, Katina, and Lauren McGhee and Tyler Shuss; a sister, Theoda "Toady" Starkey of New Philadelphia; a sister in law, Cyndi (husband, Sam) Seward of Strasburg along with four nieces and his canine companion, Crash.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Kaltenbaugh, his father in law and mother in law, Chuck and Betty Ronald along with two nephews.

A celebration of Rick's life will be held Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 11am in the First Moravian Church at Dover with Rev. Allen Bergmann officiating. Interment will be in the Dover Burial Park with a reception to follow in the Moravian Church fellowship hall. Friends may call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Wednesday from 3-8pm.
