Richard W. "Dick" Hess, 66, of Strasburg died Friday, January 15, 2010 in Aultman Hospital following a sudden illness.
Born May 19, 1943, in Dover, he was the son of the late George and Edna Maurer Hess. Richard graduated from Dover High School in 1961. He married the love of his life, Carolyn Yackey, on September 28, 1974. Carolyn preceded him in death on October 15, 2002.
Richard retired from Gregory Galvanizing Company in Canton after many years of service. He was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Strasburg. Richard enjoyed woodworking and gardening. He loved spending time with his family, whether it was playing cards or watching football. He especially loved watching his son, Richard, race stock cars in Midvale. Richard also enjoyed playing with the family dog, Fergie.
He will be sadly missed by his three daughters; Cathryn (husband, Roger) Hudnall of Ragersville, Julie Hess of Zanesville, and Holli (husband, Greg) Lather of Strasburg; his son, Richard D. (fiance, Trista Campbell)Hess of Strasburg; seven brothers and sisters, Doris (husband, Dick) Dotts of Dover, Pat (husband, Ray) Halter of Massillon, George (wife, Barb) Hess of New Philadelphia, Jackie (husband, Max)Pritchard of Zoar, Barb (husband, Fred) Richter of Massillon, Mary Lou (husband, Warren) VanFossen of Strasburg, and Susie (husand, Dick) Zifer of Dover; two grandchildren, Lea Hudnall (companion, David Patterson) of Ragersville and Sarah (husband, Jesse) Nichols of Ragersville; a step-grandson, Jason Lather of New Philadelphia; six great-grandchildren, Caleb, MaKenzie, and Kelsey Patterson, Jackson, Jaiden, and Gavin Nichols all of Ragersville; a God son, Jonah Wiandt of Strasburg, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Carolyn, he was preceded in death by his daughter; Jennifer Jean Hess; his brother, Sonny Hess; and his sister, Lucille Kopp.
A graveside service will take place Monday, January 18, 2010 at 11:00 am, in Grandview Union Cemetery, Strasburg, with Pastor Steven Woyen officiating. Following the service, a meal will be served at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Strasburg. Friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover, on Sunday, January 17, 2010, 1 5 pm.
