Robert Clayton King

January 16, 1936 — May 28, 2013

Robert Clayton King, age 77, of Dover, died Tuesday, May 28, 2013, in New Dawn Health Care Center.

Born January 16, 1936, in Uhrichsville, he was a son of the late Robert W. and Verna M. Maurer King. Clayton, as he was often called, graduated from Uhrichsville High School and went to work - at the age of seventeen - for the General Telephone & Electronics Corp. He stayed with G.T.E. for forty-one years, retiring as a central office equipment installer. Clayton served honorably in the U.S. Army between 1958 and 1960, during which time he married the former Ida Contini on June 6, 1959. The couple reared three children and shared nearly thirty-three years before Ida's passing on March 7, 1992.

Clayton was a member of Dover Lodge 707 Loyal Order of Moose, and the Communications Workers of America Local 84705 of which he served as president. In his spare time he loved to fish and camp. Clayton was a long-suffering fan of both the Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Browns, as well as Ohio State. He played the piano and the banjo, and was a voracious reader, devouring two newspapers a day and numerous magazine articles. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends who hold many happy memories.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Bloom King, whom he married on May 26, 2001; his two daughters, Laura (partner, Lisa Jensen) King, Ph.D. of Columbia, MO, and Rebecca (husband, Robert) Dills of Canal Fulton; his son, Robert W. (wife, Cynthia) King of Moon Twp., Allegheny Co., PA; his four grandchildren, Samuel Jensen-King, Clayton and Anna Dills and Robert Austin King; his brother, Raymond (wife, Kate) King of Tippecanoe; and his many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, on Friday, May 31, 2 4 and 6 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 1, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Immediately afterwards, there will be a luncheon in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard in Dover.
