Robert D. "Bob" Jones, age 75, of Dover, passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2016, in Union Hospital, after battling lung cancer.
Born June 21, 1941, in New Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Alfred P. Jones and Freda Fry Benson. Bob graduated from Dover High School in 1959, and was employed by the Reeves Steel Co., Dover, and later by Motorists Mutual Insurance Co. He retired in 2006 from Westfield Insurance Co. as a Senior Claims Adjuster with 27 years of service. Bob was also a long-time coach with a career beginning in Dover and including the school-communities of Louisville, Newcomerstown, Meadowbrook and Buckeye Trail. He impacted many young lives for the good.
Bob was a member of St. Joseph Church, Dover, and volunteered for the Tuscarawas County Homeless Shelter until his health no longer allowed him to do so.
Survivors include his wife, Julie L. Jones (nee Decker), whom he married on June 29, 1963; his sons, Todd (Lori) Jones of Ringgold, Georgia, Doug (Tricia) Jones of Brimfield, Rob (Mindy Williams) Jones of New Concord, and Shane (Kim) Jones of Green Bank, West Virginia; his grandchildren, Julian, Shannon, Toni, Justice, Quinci, Holly, Brady, Jacob, Graham and Wyatt Jones; his sisters, Nina (Melvin) Ludy of Dover, and Ruth (Rudy Luthy) Ray of Stone Creek; his brother, Paul Jones of Massillon; his sisters-in-law, Linda Jones of Amarillo, Texas, Mildred "Dee" Gordon of Radford, Virginia, and Roberta "Bobbi" (Joe Morgan) Smith of Ridgeway, South Carolina; and his nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Jones, and by his uncle, George Decker, with whom he was very close.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, on Sunday, June 26, 5 8 p.m. A Christian wake service will be held Sunday at 7:45 p.m. in the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, June 27, at 11 a.m., in St. Joseph Church, 613 N. Tuscarawas Ave., Dover, with Fr. Jimmy Hatfield officiating. Those planning to attend are instructed to go directly to the church Monday morning. Immediately following the Mass, there will be a lunch in St. Joseph's Family Life Center.
