Robert E. Heintz, a resident of Strasburg, Ohio, passed from this life on Monday morning in his home in Strasburg. A former resident of Dover, he was born on April 10, 1919, a son of Louis W. and Lydia S. Ferris Heintz. He was a descendant of the original Zoar Society of Zoar, Ohio.
Robert was a 1937 graduate of Dover High School. He married Bettie I. Van Alstyne on Dec. 18, 1941, who survives.
After graduation, Robert joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and served for two years in Idaho. He loved the CCC and always said it was one of the happiest times of his life. He was then one of the first group to be drafted from Tuscarawas county to serve in WWII. He was a member of the 37th Division, 136th Field Artillery, Second Battalion, Battery F. He was then commissioned an officer of 2nd Lt. and later to the rank of Captain. After becoming an officer he was with the 1st Calvary Division. He served during the war in the Pacific Theater and the Philippines.
After the service he worked many years at Past Time Sports in Dover, as an insurance investigator, and also worked at Marsh Lumber Co., Dover, and was manager of Glass Lumber Co. in New Philadelphia for five years. He retired as Vice President of Purchasing at the Schneider Lumber Co. in Canton after 25 years of services. He was a past member of the Ohio Lumber Dealers Assn. and the Eagles.
Besides his beloved wife, he is survived by his son and two daughters, Douglas S. Heintz of Pickerington, Mrs. George (Biva) Polen, of Dover and Vivian Eichel of New Philadelphia, one sister, Mrs. William (Doris) McFain of Granite City, Ill., 8 grandchildren: Mrs. Jeffery (Joyce) Kepschull of Tenn., Mrs. Arthur (Brenda) McDonald of Iowa, Mrs. David (Rhonda) Ward of Strasburg, Darren (Mandy) Prosser of New Philadelphia, Warren Prosser of Akron, and Ryan, Karrie and Erika Heintz of Pickerington, Oh, 2 step grandchildren: James Eichel of Montana and Tammy Eichel of Kentucky and 9 great-grandchildren: Carmen, Cody, Tyler and Travis Kepschull of Tenn., Jeffery, Matthew and Kyrie McDonald of Iowa, Kelly Ward of Strasburg and Damien Prosser of New Philadelphia. Also surviving are his close cousins, William (Helen) Smith and Gladys Ellison, both of New Philadelphia and Melva M. Heintz of South Carolina.
He was preceded in death by his parents , his life-long friend who was like a brother, Arthur Zurcher and his favorite uncle, William H. Ferris.
Per his wishes, cremation will take place and there will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be conducted by Rev. Glen Shedlock at Ridgecrest Memory Gardens in Dover on Friday at 1 p.m. The Toland-Herzig Funeral Home in Dover is handling arrangements.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a ''Celebration of Robert�(TM)s Life'' to be held on Saturday at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George Polen, 218 Bell Ave., Dover on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
