Dr. Robert Earl Ley Jr., 89, of Dover, Ohio died Monday, July 28, 2008 in Mercy Hospital at Canton following complications from a stroke in May.

He joined his father's dental office where he practiced for fifty years having retired in 1991. He was passionate about the dental profession and thoroughly enjoyed serving his patients. He founded the Dental Awareness Program for the Dover City Schools. He volunteered his time providing dental exams to Dover school students.

He was born September 30, 1918 in Dover, Ohio, the son of the late Dr. Robert and Mary Zula (Fisher) Ley Sr.

Bob was a 1936 graduate of Dover High School. He attended Ohio Wesleyan University and Baldwin Wallace College. He received his Doctorate degree in Dentistry from Ohio State University College of Dentistry. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II where he was a lieutenant.

Dr. Ley was a member of the First Moravian Church in Dover.

Dr. Ley was also deeply involved in the community. He was an active member of the Dover Kiwanis and Past President of the Dover Lions Club. He was Past Exalted Ruler and Life Member of the Dover Elks Lodge #975. He was also a 32nd degree mason and member of the Dover Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Valley of Canton, Tadmor Shrine, Royal Order of Jesters. He was also a member of the 40 et 8 Voiture 117 where he was a past Chef de Gare and life member of the Dover American Legion.

He also enjoyed grilling outdoors and vacationing with his family. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, golfing, baseball, and football. He also previously loved to train bird dogs.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Suzanne (Weible) Ley of 63 years. She died January 15, 2007. He was also preceded by his stepmother, Florence (Jones) Ley and a younger brother, Richard.

Robert is survived by his seven children Dr. Robert E. ( wife, Christel) Ley III of Dover, Sally Ley and husband, Jeff Pacheco of Honolulu, Hawaii, Jeanne (husband, Roy) Leatherbury of Centerville, Ohio, Betsy (husband, John) Berenzweig of Somerville, Ohio, Janet (husband, Fred) Foutz of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Mary (husband, Doug) Bolden of Hamilton, Ohio and Heather Ley of Massillon; 14 grandchildren Doreen Ley of Dover, Dr. Andrea (Dr.Steve) Penepacker of Buffalo Grove, Illinois, Liz Ley of Las Vegas, Nevada, Sarah Pacheco of Honolulu, Hawaii, David (Noel) Leatherbury of St. Charles, Illinois, Nikki (Josh) Cerra of Portland, Oregon, Jennifer Leatherbury of Denver Colorado, Rob Leatherbury of Centerville, John Berenzweig of Columbus, Ohio, Jay Berenzweig of Blacksburg, Virginia, Colt (Katie) Foutz of Bolingbrook, Illinois, Dan Foutz of Atlanta, Georgia, Jake Foutz of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Sam Foutz of Findlay, Ohio and five great grandchildren, Lauren Penepacker, Colin Leatherbury, Cate Leatherbury, Brady Foutz, and Jonah Foutz; sisters in law, Anne Weible of Dover and Marge Weible of Honolulu, Hawaii.

Friends may call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover on Friday from 6-9pm where Masonic Services will be at 5:30pm and Elks services at 5:45.
Funeral services will be held Saturday morning, August 2, 2008 at 11am in the First Moravian Church at Dover with Rev. Allen Bergmann officiating. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery at Dover where the Dover VFW will conduct military graveside honors. A reception will follow at the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center.
