Robert J. Pavel, 72, of Dover, died Tuesday, August 24, 2010, in his home, following a sudden illness.
Born, November 7, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois, he was a son of the late Walter and Marie Uher Pavel. Robert graduated high school in Mankato, Minnesota, and went on to serve honorably with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He married the former Elsie B. Hertzog in Chicago on January 4, 1964, and the couple moved to New Orleans where Robert was employed by the Westvaco Corporation. Robert was transferred to Tuscarawas County in 1988 when Westvaco was sold to Stone Container. He continued his employment with Stone Container and its successor, Smurfit Stone, until his retirement in 2002.
First and foremost, Robert was a loving husband, father and grandfather a hardworking man who provided for his family. In his spare time, he enjoyed carving birds and boats from wood and then painting them. In earlier days, he liked to go rock-hunting around the Midwest, and fishing and golfing in New Orleans.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie; two daughters, Mary Loibl of Dover and Melissa (Chris) Lewis of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; three grandchildren, Rachel Pecora, Evan Loibl and Melanie Traylor; great-grandson, Eli Benoit; a brother, Walter (Carol) Pavel of Lake Havasu City, Arizona; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeremy Traylor; and by a sister, June Nordhausen.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 28, at 1 p.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, with Donald Zeger of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses officiating. Immediately following the service, there will be a luncheon in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard in Dover.
