Robert Lee “Bob” Smith, 84, of Strasburg, died Tuesday, Mar. 4, 2003, in Union Hospital, Dover, following a long illness.
Born Feb. 23, 1919, in Strasburg, he was a son of the late Edward and Clara Kuntz Smith. Bob attended school at the old Fernsell School near Strasburg. He served his country in the Second Armored Division of the United States Army during World War II, participating in the invasion of Sicily and Normandy. Bob retired from the Eberhart Coal Co., Dover, in 1984, following over thirty years of service.
He was a member of the Strasburg post of the American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans. In years past, he enjoyed hunting and traveling.
Survivors include his wife Stella Zeigler Smith, whom he married Oct. 11, 1940, in Greenup, KY, and many nieces and nephews of both his and his wife�(TM)s family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Elwin, Aaron and Charles Smith, and by two nephews, Eddie Smith and Jeff Lab.
A funeral service will be held Friday, Mar. 7, 2003, at 11 a.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home, Dover, with Pastor Fred W. Grosse of the First Lutheran Church, Strasburg, officiating. Burial will be in Dover Burial Park, where the Strasburg post of the American Legion will present military rites. Following the committal, there will be a reception in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center. Visitation will be Thursday (today), Mar. 6, 2003, 5 �" 8 p.m., in the funeral home.
