Robert Marshall Short, 81 of Chardon, Ohio formerly of Dover, OH passed away on August 6, 2006 following a short illness. Born on May 30, 1925 in North East, PA, son of the late Harry and Mildred Short. Graduated from North East High School in 1943, was a Marine in World War II, serving in Okinawa, Japan until discharged in 1946. He attended many Marine Reunions until he became ill. He also graduated from Ohio University in 1950 with a degree in civil engineering. He retired in 1980 as Deputy Director of ODOT, District 11 in New Philadelphia after 30 years. He then worked at Quicksall & Associates engineering firm for 10 years before retiring.
Robert was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Strasburg, Civil War Roundtable, Dover Historical Society, Dover Masonic Lodge #59 and Eastern Star. He was a Boy Scout leader, Little League baseball manager and taught Sunday school. He enjoyed trains, gardening, flea markets, baseball, football and his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Mildred Louise (Garnow) Short with whom he would have celebrated his 59th year of marriage on December 27, 2006. Two sons, Gary (Jeannette Watkins) Short, Harry (Nancy) Short, one daughter Cathy (Tim) Mekota and 2 grandchildren, Hannah & Gus Mekota. He also leaves behind his sister, Judith Wassink and brother-in-law William Wassink.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Rosalind Miller and brother-in-law Herbert Miller, a brother-in-law, Raymond (Lillian) Garnow.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2006 at 11:00 am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Homes and Crematory at Dover with Pastor Fred Grosse and Pastor Steven Woyen officiating. Interment will be at the Dover Burial Park where the Dover VFW will conduct military graveside services. Friends can call at the funeral home on Friday from 6-8 pm and one hour prior to the service on Saturday. The Dover Masonic Lodge will perform a Masonic service at 5:45 pm on Friday.
