Robert W. "Bob" Snyder, 89, of Dover, died Monday, Mar. 21, 2011, in Union Hospital, following a brief illness.
Born Sept. 18, 1921, in Canton, he was a son of the late Howard B. and Mabel Schmucker Snyder. Bob moved at a young age with his family to Dover where his father had taken a position with the Reeves Steel Co. He graduated from Dover High School in 1939, and attended Miami University until the outbreak of the Second World War when he was drafted. Bob served honorably with the U.S. Army Air Force, with much of his time spent in the South Pacific. Following the war, he returned to Dover and married the former Reba J. Taylor, on Dec. 22, 1946, in Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church. Bob graduated from the Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, OK, in 1947. The couple set up housekeeping and reared two children in Dover. Bob was employed by the former Joy Manufacturing Co. in New Philadelphia for some thirty-four years, retiring in 1986.
He was a faithful, active member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dover almost his entire life, giving freely of his time and talents.
Survivors include his loving wife, Reba; a daughter, Jean (David) Seikel of New Philadelphia; a son, Kent (Kathy) Snyder of Shelby; five grandchildren, Matthew (Anne) Seikel of Toledo, Mark (Larissa) Seikel of New Philadelphia, Kevin (fiance, Jessica Foster) Snyder of Akron, Kurt Snyder of Newark, and Kelly (Glenn) Zdazenski of Plano, TX; five great-grandchildren, Jacob, Lauren, Makenna, Gabriella and Hallie Seikel; sister-in-law, Martha Snyder of Crescent, IA; and by two nephews.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by grandson, Richard D. Seikel, and by a brother, Donald E. Snyder.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, Mar. 24, at 2 p.m., in Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Pastor Donald L. Rice Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Dover Burial Park.
