Roger W. Immel, age 87, of Dover, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 27, 2021, in Community Hospice’s Truman House in New Philadelphia, following a lengthy illness.
Born June 8, 1933, in Shanesville, he was a son of the late Garrison and Opal Schweitzer Immel. Roger graduated from Sugarcreek-Shanesville High School and went on to serve honorably with the United States Army during the Korean War. On July 10, 1955, following his service time, Roger married Joy A. Thompson. The couple had three children and shared 34 years of marriage prior to Joy’s untimely death from cancer on August 7, 1989. Early on, Roger was employed by both Rosenberry Packard in New Philadelphia and Potschner Ford in Dover; he then went to work for Dover’s Reeves Steel Co. from which he retired as a metallurgical inspector after more than 30 years there.
Roger was a long-time member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Dover, and was a devoted family man. Some of his favorite pastimes included fishing, playing golf, finding golf balls, and taking long drives in the countryside.
He will be dearly missed by his children, Holli (Jim) Immel-Keener, Heather (Bob Gibbs) Immel and Shaun (Jennifer) Immel, all of Dover; his grandchildren, Madalyn (Jon) Baer, Zachary, Rachel and Evelyn Immel; his siblings, Maxine Gerber, Max and Keith (Peggy) Immel; his closest friend, Carol Harrold; and his many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, and his wife Joy, Roger was preceded in death by his brothers, Doran and Ken Immel; his sisters-in-law, Janet and Marlene Immel; and his brother-in-law, Wayne Gerber.
A private family service will be held with Pastor Dotty Hartzell officiating. Burial will be in Union Hill Cemetery, Sugarcreek.
