Ron Maurer, 80, formerly of Zoar, died peacefully on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 with his family at his side following a 2-year battle of ALS.
A son of the late Clinton and Evelyn (Swartz) Maurer, Ron was born June 30, 1944 in Canton, Ohio. He graduated from Tusky Valley High School in the class of 1962.
Ron was a proud veteran of the United States Army and served in Korea from 1963 and 1964 in the First Calvary Division, receiving his honorable discharge in September, 1965. He was the owner of the Old Homestead Restaurant in Zoar, Top Hat Chimney Sweep, and was a skilled carpenter.
He was an Assistant Chief for the Village of Zoar volunteer fire department and was active with the Bolivar American Legion Post #190. He was a member of the Bolivar Sportsman’s Club and a life member of the Zoar Community Association. Ron was an avid outdoorsman and he especially enjoyed trapshooting, hunting and fishing. His woodworking hobby kept him busy making special pieces for family and friends.
For the past 13 years he and Sherry were full-time RV’ers where they traveled across the U.S. as ‘workampers’, spending winters in Arizona, Florida and Texas where they made many friends.
He will be missed by his wife of nearly 60 years, Sherry (Baughman) Maurer whom he married on July 11, 1964; his children, Shelly Dee (Jim) Jepsen of Amanda, Jill (Dan) Capozella of Dover, Robin (Mike) Griesen of Dover; grandchildren, Cheyenne (Brandon) Erb of Amanda, Sierra Jepsen of Livingston, MT, Viviana Capozella of Charlotte, NC, Carlo Capozella, a grad student in Tuscon, AZ, Cole and Tori Griesen of Dover and a newborn great grandson, Leighton Wyatt Erb. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, Ron was also preceded in death by his sister, Sandy and brother-in-law, Bob Lindsey; brother, Glenn and sister in-law, Rita Maurer.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 8th starting at 11:30 am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover. Interment will be in the Zoar Cemetery where military graveside services will be conducted. Following the burial, a luncheon will be held in the St. Joseph Catholic Church Family Life Center. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home on Monday from 10:00 am to 11:30 am.
