Roy Kermit Smith, 94, of Dover passed away peacefully on Friday, June 23, 2023 at his home following a period of declining health.

 

Roy was born on December 12, 1928 in Bedford, Ohio to the late Lewis and Zora Montgomery Smith.  The family moved to a farm in Dover when he was two months old and he remained there the rest of his life.  Roy began working at the former Robinson Clay in Midvale before serving his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.  Following the war, he returned to Robinson Clay until he started his own business, Suburban Auto Wrecking in New Philadelphia.  His true passion, though was farming and his pride and joy was his herd of beef cattle.  In the winter months he enjoyed working on his antique cars or a tractor.  Roy was a founding member of the Fairfield Township Volunteer Fire Department and served as Township Trustee for over 22 years.  He also attended Bisel Church.

 

Roy was married to the former Orpha Powell for 48 years until her passing in 2007.  In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Troy Smith; and three sisters, Edith Plummer, Guyda Newton and Norma Briggs.

 

He is survived by his two daughters, Barbara Smith and Debbie Smith both of Dover; and several nieces and nephews which he enjoyed having breakfast with every week at Dees Restaurant.

 

Services will be held on Tuesday, June 27th in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover with Firefighter Services starting at 11:00 am and funeral services immediately following with Pastor Roger Warnes officiating.  Interment will be in the Bisel Church Cemetery where the New Philadelphia VFW will conduct military graveside services.  The family will be greeting friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10 to 11 am.
