Roy "Toady" Howell

Roy D. "Toady" Howell, 91, a longtime Dover, Ohio resident died Friday, Feb. 8, 2013 in the Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia following a brief illness.

"Toady" retired in 1986 as a heavy machine operator for Red Malcuit Inc. at Strasburg where he worked for 30 years.

Born April 9, 1921 in Flushing, Ohio, he was the son of the late Chester and Lula (Toole) Howell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Juanita "Jean" (Huston) Howell who died Dec. 15, 1999; his daughter, Juanita Uebel and a sister, Freda Rennicker.

"Toady" was a member of the First Moravian Church in Dover. He was also active in the New Philadelphia Elks and the former Dover Elks, the Dover and New Philadelphia VFW posts, and the Dover Moose Lodge. After graduating from the Strasburg High School, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He will be remembered for his "great" sense of humor. His family will remember his weekly exercise of searching for the Bargain Hunter and his loving and joking personality.

He will be sadly missed by his family including his daughter, Linda (Delbert) Ashkettle and son in law, Bill Uebel all of Dover; five grandchildren, Jeff (Tammy) Ashkettle of Tiltonsville, Ohio, Rick (Becky) Ashkettle of Pittsburgh, Pa., Mindy (Eric) Hilling of Parkersburg, W.Va., Melissa Kyler of Sneads Ferry, N.C., and Paula (Chris) Hale of Dover; 14 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. He will also fondly be remembered by the many friends he made during his rounds to the clubs and restaurants that he frequently visited.

A service celebrating "Toady's" life will be held Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013 beginning at 11am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory at Dover with Pastor John Wallace officiating. He will be laid to rest beside his wife, Jean in the Dover Burial Park where the Dover VFW will conduct military honors. A reception will follow in the Dover First Moravian Church Fellowship Hall. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4-7pm.
