Ruby M. Nicewander

April 8, 1918 — June 12, 2008

Ruby M. Nicewander, 90, a life resident of Dundee, died Thursday, June 12, 2008.

She was born April 8, 1918 at Dundee, one of seven children born to the late Oscar & Estella Maybaugh Landis.

Ruby led a beautifully simple life, perhaps best described by her daughter Betty, "She was just a good person, a good friend, and a good mom."

She loved traveling especially her trips out of state to West Virginia, Tennessee, Maryland and Pennsylvania, in addition to being outdoors while at home. A green thumb as well, Ruby was meticulous in her care for the flowers she planted each year. She enjoyed reading, completing crossword puzzles, and listening to country music.

Ruby will long be remembered for her culinary talents and her love of playing hostess to big Sunday gatherings and large holiday meals, which she still prepared into her 80's.

She was a member of the Dundee Church of God, where she faithfully attended worship service and Sunday school for years.

Her husband, the late Ben Nicewander, died June 22, 1974.

Surviving family members include: two daughters, Betty (Ulysses) Graves of Navarre, and Virginia (Ralph) Claypool of Killbuck; a son, Jeffrey (Robin) Nicewander of Bellevue; three sisters Esther Schrock of Hartville, Betty Hostetler of Trail, and Corrine Ferrell of Navarre; two brothers, Willard Landis of Dover and Delmer (Connie) Landis of Dundee; 15 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.

Along with her parents and husband, Ruby was preceded in death by: a daughter, Margaret Harmon; three sons, Robert, Oscar, and Richard Nicewander, a sister, and two brothers.

A funeral service that celebrates Ruby's life will be held Monday, June 16, at 2:00 p.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Strasburg. Interment will be in the Dundee Cemetery. Following the burial, a "big family meal" will be served in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center, just the way Ruby would have liked.

Friends may call in the funeral home on Sunday from 2-4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
