Samuel Evan Schwartz

July 22, 1962 — October 24, 2006

Samuel Evan “Sam” Schwartz, age 44, of Mineral City, unexpectedly passed away Tuesday, October 24, 2006, in his home.

He was born July 22, 1962, son of Nancy L. Evans Seabrook of New Philadelphia, and the late Earl E. Schwartz of New Philadelphia. His stepmother, Donna Schwartz of New Phila., also survives.

Sam was a wonderful, carefree person who loved life. He was always helping other people, no matter what was needed " friends always knew they could count on him. He was a “people person” who loved children, spending time with friends and family, gardening, antiquing, and of course, cooking, a skill that he first honed while studying Culinary Arts as a 1981 graduate of Buckeye Career Center.

Cooking was his passion, and, as such, he spent much of his time in the kitchen. For nearly a decade he was the owner of Chef Sam(TM)s Village café in Mineral City. Over the years he was also a chef at St. Johns Villa in Carrollton, Blue Bird Farms, Tally(TM)s Catering Service, and Hennis Health Care Centre.

But it was perhaps his current endeavor where he touched the most lives " as Culinary Arts instructor at the Buckeye Career Center. In his seventh year at Buckeye, Sam was a valued faculty member, who, by teaching a course that he took as a high school student, was able to give back of his time and talents, in training tomorrow(TM)s chefs. He was respected and trusted by faculty members, and loved by his students. His zeal for the culinary arts will surely be missed around the Trumpet Room Restaurant and the school cafeteria.

In addition to his mother and stepmother, Sam is survived by: Bear (Karen) Schwartz of Tuscarawas, Melanie (John) Wright of New Philadelphia, Jim (Amber) Heid of Leesville, and Donald (Erin) Schwartz of New Philadelphia; a step-brother, Michael (Sherry) Gardner, of Richardson, Texas; a very special niece, Valerie (Dale) Nealy, and a large extended family that includes many nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins; as well as special friends, Bill Elias, Harold Wagstaff and the Bair brothers;

A public service celebrating Sam(TM)s life will be held Monday, October 30, at 11:00 a.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral home & Crematory, Dover, with Pastor Rob Musick officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Burial Park in New Philadelphia. Following the burial, family and friends will be received in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center, where a meal will be served. Friends may call in the funeral home on Sunday from 1-5 p.m. Those unable to attend or wishing to share a fond memory may sign the online register book for Sam by visiting the “obituaries” link on the funeral home(TM)s website.

A memorial service for students, faculty and staff at Buckeye is also being planned.

The family suggests that memorial gifts be made in Sam(TM)s name to the Culinary Arts Department, c/o Buckeye Career Center, 545 University Dr. NE, New Philadelphia.
