Samuel R. “Sam” Notz, 83, of Dover, died Thursday, June 30, 2005, in Aultman Hospital, Canton, following a brief illness.
Born June 16, 1922, in Somerdale, Sam graduated in 1940 from Bolivar High School, and, at the beginning of World War II, entered the U.S. Army. He served with an engineering battalion on Europe. Following the war, he married the former Dorothy Starkey of Canton, and the two were blessed with four children. Sam worked as a kiln operator for Corundite Refractories, from which he retired, and as a farmer.
Sam was a member of St. John�(TM)s United Church of Christ in Bolivar. He was a devoted family man, and especially enjoyed going to his grandchildren�(TM)s sporting events. Other joys included Hereford cattle and strawberries, both of which he raised. Sam was a member of “The Honey Bunch” golf group with whom he spent many good times. Additionally, he was a long-time Cleveland Indians fan.
Survivors include a daughter, Joy (Rick) Crone of Dover; three sons, Randy (Lisa) Notz, Alan (Linda) Notz, and Larry (Becky) Notz, all of Dover; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy, in 1997; two brothers, Alvin and Richard Notz; and by a niece, Jessica Swinford..
Sam�(TM)s life will be celebrated in a service Saturday, July 2, at 11 a.m., in St. John�(TM)s United Church of Christ, Bolivar, with Pastor Carol Clements officiating. Burial will be in Dover Burial Park. Following the committal, a meal will be served in the church. Family and friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home in Dover on Friday (today), July 1, 5 �" 8 p.m., and on Saturday, 10 �" 11 a.m., in the church.
