Sandy Deetz, 74, of Dover passed away peacefully Monday evening, April 4, 2016 in the Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia following a brief illness.
Born Dec. 22, 1941 in Dover, she was the daughter of the late Adrian J. and Janet (Incarnato) Deetz. In addition to her parents, she has joined her sister, Sherry Moran and brother, Adrian "Buddy" Deetz.
In Sandy's words "I graduated from Dover St. Joseph's High School and then attended Hunter College in New York City. I began by broadcasting career coincidentally at the age of 15 when I walked into the the WJER radio station to hire a DJ for a school dance. I got an interview with DJ Sal Batera on the air and two weeks later I had my own 15 minute show called "Rambler Review."
Following graduation, I moved to Akron and worked for WHLO and then had a health and beauty show at WEWS-TV in Cleveland. I soon arrived in New York City and attended Hunter College and did modeling assignments for TV commercials for Amoco, Sony Beauty Rest and General Electric. In 1977, I submitted a story to NBC TV on a female boxer who was trying to get licensed in NYC. Now Women Boxing is an Olympic sport. Sandy became the first female sports reporter for NBC local news and looked at sports with a different eye than the male reporters. Her interviews included stories on soccer, interviews with Steve Cauthen (youngest jockey to ever win the US Triple Crown on Affirmed), Mario Andretti (race car driver), Rod Gilbert of the New York Rangers and Astronaut Alan Shepard. Sandy was a gifted storyteller and in 1978 was nominated for an Emmy Award.
Sandy was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dover.
She leaves behind her brother in law, Richard "Rick" Moran with whom she resided along with nieces and nephews that include Christopher and Brock Moran.
