Lifelong Stone Creek resident, Sarah J. Ellwood, 83, died Monday, March 24, 2008 in the Park Village Health Care Center after a courageous battle with illness.
Born May 12, 1924 at Stone Creek, she was the daughter of the late William & Edith Troyer Brown.
Sarah was a hard worker, who, over the years, had worked at the former Alsco plant in Gnadenhutten, the former Hart's Department store in New Philadelphia, and had also enjoyed her years spent working in the laundry for Park Village Health Care Center.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church at Stone Creek. She enjoyed quilting and sewing even making all of her children's clothing as they were growing up, and especially looked forward to the annual trip to Canada, shared with dear friends Paul and Helen Wherley.
Each day, twice a day, she would share a cup of coffee or meal with friends at T.J.'s Restaurant in Stone Creek. She made dozens of friends there, including the staff that she would get to visit with every day, considering many of them as close as family.
Sarah was saddened by the loss of her husband, Frank R. Ellwood, who died July 19, 1988. Along with Frank and her parents, a daughter, Rebecca, three brothers and two sisters, also preceded her in death.
Surviving family members include: three daughters, Brenda Stocker of Stone Creek, Glenda (Dean) Boitnott of Stone Creek, and Sue (Mitch) Myers of Port Washington; three grandsons, Jamie Stocker of Stone Creek, Jason (Tara) Myers of Chippewa, and Jeremy Myers of Port Washington; and a great granddaughter, Alyssa.
Her pastor, Dr. William C. Haggis, will lead a service that celebrates Sarah's life on Friday, March 28, at 10:30 a.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover. Interment will follow in the Stone Creek Cemetery. Friends may call in the funeral home on Thursday from 4-8 p.m.
Those unable to attend or wishing to share a fond memory may sign the online register book for Sarah by visiting the "obituaries" link on the funeral home's website.
The family suggests that memorial gifts be made to the American Cancer Society, 1599 Clifton Rd. NE, Atlanta, GA 30329.
