Shirley Ann Massarelli, age 73, of New Philadelphia, went to be with our Lord Monday, May 23, 2016, after battling cancer.
Born February 5, 1943, at Winfield, she was a daughter of the late Don H. and Alta M. Pershing Kinser. Shirley graduated from Dover High School in 1961. She was a successful businesswoman who was well-known for her Red Onion Bar & Restaurant and Red Onion Catering Co. She was the talented creator of many delicious recipes used in her businesses. Thousands of people in Tuscarawas County, and beyond, have enjoyed her fine food.
Shirley was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and good friend to many. Her survivors include her daughters, Lori Jo (Roland) Zontini and Kimberly Ann Walton, both of New Philadelphia; her grandchildren, Ashley Marie (Todd) Hattie, Nicci Lynn, Haley Anna and Dalton James (April) Zontini, Joshua Ian (Melissa) Walton, Brittany Noel (Zack) Moore and Luca Torelo Massarelli; her great-grandchildren, Ella Noelle Walton and Wyatt Jennings Zontini; her sister, Sherry M. Goodall of New Philadelphia; her brother, Donald A. Kinser also of New Philadelphia; her niece and two nephews; and her former husband, Jerry Massarelli.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, June 2, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, 613 N. Tuscarawas Ave., Dover; Fr. Ty Tomson will officiate. Burial will follow in Dover Burial Park. Family and friends are invited to call at the church a half hour prior to the Mass.
The family suggests that contributions in Shirley's memory be made to Tuscarawas Central Catholic High School, St. Joseph Church, or the Tuscarawas County Humane Society.
