Stanley Beaber

Stanley Beaber, 82, of Uhrichsville, and formerly of New Philadelphia, died Saturday, June 18, 2005, in his home.

Born Oct. 5, 1922, on College Ave. NW, New Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Perry A. and Gertrude Emig Beaber. Stanley graduated in 1942 from New Philadelphia High School. He then entered the United States Army, where he served with Homeland Security in California and received training in radar technology. He was sent overseas to the Pacific Theatre with the First Rocket Battalion. His videotaped recollections of his service years are included among the oral histories in the Library of Congress. He also was a Life Member of Carl C. Stoller Post 1445 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at New Philadelphia.

In June 1946, he married the former Elsie Mae Fiddler in Mineral City, and moved to the country, where Stanley cultivated his love for the outdoors. Stanley was employed by the former Reeves Steel Co. of Dover, retiring as a crane operator in the mill in 1982.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman, making and selling fishing lures for many years. He was a member of the Buckeye Big Buck Club and at age 75 received the George Applegarth Senior Hunter Award Feb. 21, 1998. Stanley also enjoyed working with stained glass, and designing and crafting many stained-glass lamps, windows and other items. He also grew grapes, fruit trees, and berries to make wine, which was popular among all those who received it as a gift. He also grafted those trees and grapevines, plus planted flowers and trees and experimented with plants in his large gardens over the years.

A daily reader of the newspaper and books on a great range of subjects, Stanley loved history, particularly of the Native Americans. He belonged to the James Willard Schultz Society, the Custer Society, Friends of the Assiniboines Foundation, and the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation.

He is survived by his daughters, Candy Beaber of Stone Creek, Lorraine “Bic” Burkey of New Philadelphia, along with her fiancé, Dan Gladman, and Tammie Beaber, also of New Philadelphia. Also surviving are a brother, Harold Beaber, and his wife, Lucille Beaber, both of New Philadelphia, two nieces; a nephew; sister-in-law, Nora Lewis of Mineral City; good neighbors and others he was close to.

Besides his parents, Stanley was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elsie, on July 1, 1978, and numerous aunts and uncles whom he was close to while growing up; a sister-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and a niece and nephew.

Stanley�(TM)s life will be celebrated in a service Wednesday, June 22, at 11 a.m., in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, 246 E. High Ave., New Philadelphia, with Pastor Peggy Garner of the Mineral City United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in German Cemetery at Mineral City. The V.F.W. will conduct military rites at the grave. Following the committal, there will be a reception in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center, 801 Boulevard, Dover.
