Steven E. "Steve" Hidey, 59, of New Philadelphia, died Sunday, March 14, 2010, in his home, with his loving family around him. Steve had battled cancer, diagnosed in September of last year.

Born June 8, 1950, in Dover, he was a son of the late Luther H. and Margaret Rose Zedi Hidey. Steve graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1968, and went on to serve honorably in the United States Army. He was employed by Union Camp Chemicals (now Arizona Chemical), from which he retired in 2001 after twenty four years of service. In his retirement, Steve enjoyed working for Shook Auto in New Philadelphia.

Steve was fond of reading, and his truly greatest joy was being with those he loved.

Survivors include his wife, Laura E. (Rothacher) Hidey, whom he married on January 7, 1982; five daughters, whom he called "the daughters of my heart," Hazel (Ron) Bailey of Baltic, Cindy (Wally) Sutkowy of Lehigh Acres, Florida, Betty (Ron) Dixon of Naples, Florida, Paula Shotwell and Debby Daniels, both of New Philadelphia; fourteen grandchildren, Christina and Larry Schweitzer, Lori (Todd) Ditto, Danny and Steven Daniels, Beth Michelle, Michael, Stephani and David Sutkowy, Rhonda (Donovan) Donley, Brian Bailey, Jan (Mike) Fernandez and Julie (Dan) Frangello; six great-grandchildren, Kiera Donley, Kyra Ditto, Josiah and Noah Fernandez, D.J. and Nicolas Frangello; a brother, Martin (Brenda) Hidey of Uhrichsville; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by three sisters, Jane Reynolds, Helen Eckleberry and Margaret Hidey; and by two brothers, Victor and Frederick Hidey.

Steve's life will be celebrated in a service Thursday, March 18, at 11 a.m. in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, 803 N. Wooster Ave., Dover, with Pastor Carol Baker of Word of Faith Christian Center officiating. Burial will be in Brandywine Cemetery, Dover, where military rites will be performed by the New Philadelphia post of the V.F.W. Following the committal, there will be a luncheon in the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center on the Boulevard in Dover.
