Susan S. Smith

Susan Stratton Smith, 77, of Dover died Sunday, June 26, 2016.

Born August 29, 1938 in New Philadelphia Susan was the daughter of the late Edmond and Gertrude Stratton of New Philadelphia, Ohio. She was a 1956 graduate of New Philadelphia High School and was homecoming queen her senior year.


She married Larry N. Smith in 1959 and they had two daughters, Lori E. Smith (Todd) and Julie A. Gibson (Michael). She is also survived by a granddaughter, Claire E. Gibson; brother, John E. Stratton and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.


Susan attended The Ohio State University where she and Larry spent several years in Columbus, and then moved to Dover. She was involved with the sales and operation of the House of Baskets in New Philadelphia with her dad and brother. Susan was a beautiful girl with a sparkling personality, she loved reading and watching sporting events, and of course her favorite show, Jeopardy. Susan also enjoyed cooking and shopping with her daughters and granddaughter. She loved animals and had two dogs (Barney and Sophie). She also enjoyed gathering for lunch with her NPHS classmates. In her younger years, Susan enjoyed boating and skiing on Atwood Lake, playing tennis and a good game of bridge with family and friends. She liked watching Ohio State football with her husband and cousin, Jerry Marlowe.
