Thomas E. Hershberger, Sr.

Thomas E. Hershberger, Sr., 77, of Strasburg died Friday, June 13, 2008 at Doctors Hospital in Massillon.

He had retired from Reese Trucking and had also worked at Von Kaenel Trucking and North American Refractories.

Born November 6, 1930 in Sugarcreek he was a son of the late Harold and Grace Burger Hershberger, and was raised by Amos and Ann Shutt.

Thomas served his country during the Korean War with the Army's 3rd Platoon, Company E, 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. He was later a member of the Charles Hofer Post of the American Legion in Strasburg and was also a member of AARP. Thomas enjoyed many things in life, especially watching the Browns and Indians, playing cards or going camping and bowling with friends. But most importantly, he loved being with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elaine Slemmer Hershberger whom he married on January 28, 1956. Thomas is also survived by three sons, John (Mary) Hershberger of New Philadelphia, Rick Hershberger of Strasburg and Tom "Jr." (Kay) Hershberger of Dover; three daughters, Lucy (Clint) Stamets of Dover, Debbie (Chuck) Shearer of Strasburg and Kathy (Dan) Donato of Strasburg; sister, Donna Domer and her companion, Dick Lawrence of Columbus; 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a stepfather, Harold Domer.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at 11:00 am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Homes and Crematory at Dover with Pastor Ed Scaglione officiating. Interment will be in the Grandview Union Cemetery at Strasburg where the Strasburg American Legion will conduct military graveside services.
