Thomas Gilbert Hess, 58, of 2427 Crown St. Ext. NW, Dover died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family, Monday, November 15, 1999, after a short battle with cancer.
Born January 10, 1941 near Dover, he was the son of the late Gilbert E. & Freda M. (Berger) Hess. He was also the step-son of the late Thelma M. (Judy) Hess.
He had been employed as the office manager for Red Malcuit, Inc. of Strasburg for 32 years, before he had to retire in 1993 because of Post-Polio Syndrome. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Dover and the H.E.L.P.S. (Help, Encouragement & Love for Polio Survivors) Foundation. He enjoyed camping and fishing when he was able to, and watching the Cleveland Indians, Browns and Ohio State games.
In addition to his wife, Jeanne M. (Merwin) Hess, whom he married December 23, 1967, he is survived by one son and his wife, Charles J. & Kara L. Hess of Copley, one daughter and son-in-law, Kristin D. & Sean P. O'Connor of Canton; and two granddaughters, Megan Rose and Lauren Nicole O'Connor of Canton. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law Terry and Shirley Hess of Fairfax, VA, three sisters and brothers-in-law: Alice and Richard Mertes of Merrill, WI, Edward and Linda Merwin of Hastings, MN, and Roger and Carole Merwin of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mona Root, of Dover.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 19, at 1:00pm, in Toland-Herzig Funeral Home, Dover with Rev. James Scott officiating. Interment will be in the Grandview Union Cemetery at Strasburg. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 6-9pm.
